Zicam
Recent reports in the news have focused the public's attention on a potentially serious problem with two over-the-counter "remedies" for the common cold. ZICAMŽ, manufactured by Matrixx Initiatives, Inc., and Cold-EezeŽ, manufactured by the Quigley Corporation, are homeopathic nasal medications that are claimed to shorten the duration and minimize the symptoms associated with the common cold. Zicam may be applied to the nasal cavities either with a spray or swab and Cold-Eeze is a nasal spray.
Both of these medications contain the active ingredient Zinc Gluconate, the use of which in the nose spray has been linked to possible side effects including loss of the senses of taste and smell. Loss of smell is known as anosmia and both conditions may be permanent.
Several lawsuits have been brought against the manufacturers of ZICAM and Cold-Eeze alleging that they knew or should have know about the potential dangers associated with the use of nasal medications containing zinc. It has been documented by some medical researchers that the use of zinc and products containing zinc can result in nerve damage. It is alleged that the manufacturers of these products failed to provide sufficient warnings to the users of the products even though the side effects of using zinc compounds have been documented.
If you or someone you know has experienced loss of taste or Anosmia or any type of burning sensation in the nasal passageways, you should immediately consult with a doctor. In addition, you may wish to consider speaking with an attorney knowledgeable in product liability claims and medical issues to determine if you might have the right to pursue a claim against the manufacturers of these products.
